ATTENTION DEFICIT/HYPERACTIVITY

The hallmark symptoms of ADHD include difficulties with attention, concentration, and impulse control. Many adults may recognize these symptoms in themselves, and often, parents may identify these symptoms in their children, leading them to wonder if they do indeed have Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

The difficulty with an ADHD diagnosis* is that these symptoms can be components of many diagnoses. Therefore, to obtain an accurate diagnosis requires consulting with appropriate mental health and medical professionals for testing, interviews, and observations providing convergent data about the identified problem.

An accurate diagnosis of ADHD is often a relief to the patient. It provides access to important treatment options, helping the patient obtain more satifsying interpersonal and career functioning. It also allows the patient and his/her loved ones a greater understanding of his or her behavior.
